O.B. (Bertie) Watts
After a long and remarkable life, Bertie Watts has died at 91. Julia, the love of his life and his wife of nearly 60 years, passed in 2011. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Joanna (Jack Lubek), Dinah (David Pauloff) and Caroline (Pete Tyson), his granddaughters Pippa and Tamara Lubek, Jessie and Carly Trevella and his step-grandson Nick Pauloff (Kathleen and Eliza). He will be fondly remembered by many Londoners whose lives he touched as an exceptional teacher and principal at Central, Oakridge, Wheable, Montcalm and Banting secondary schools. He was also an alderman, a co-founder of London’s Society for Learning in Retirement and a great supporter of the arts. As an actor and director, Bertie delighted audiences at the Grand Theatre, the Palace Theatre, UWO and many “second” theatres over the years. He also directed several school shows during the 60s as a teacher at Central, and in 1984 during his final year as a principal, he directed Banting’s very first school show, Brigadoon. He was a deeply conscientious man who always brought a sense of decency, respect for the environment and concern for the disadvantaged to everything he did. He served on the board for the John Howard Society and was a generous supporter of many charities devoted to protecting the rights, and enhancing the lives of others. A celebration of Bertie’s life will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 2:00 pm at MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME 1559 Fanshawe Park Rd E. East of Highbury, London. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the John Howard Society http://johnhoward.on.ca/london/ 416.408.4282, or the CNIB www.cnib.ca 1.800.563.2642.
